Why Pride Slips When Love Arrives

Pride is a spine—

Straight, deliberate, practiced.

It teaches you how to stand alone,

How to keep your name intact

Even when the wind insists otherwise.

Love asks you to bend.

Not in surrender,

But in offering—

Your throat exposed to the truth,

Your carefully folded dignity

Left on the chair like a coat

You forgot to pick up.

In love,

You want to be chosen

More than you want to be right.

You rehearse silence.

You forgive early.

You shrink the ache so it fits

Inside a smile.

Pride wants symmetry—

Equal effort, equal ground,

A ledger that balances at night.

Love is terrible at accounting.

It overpays.

It tips too much.

It stays even when

The music has already stopped.

You say you’ll walk away.

You don’t.

You say you deserve better.

You wait.

Because love teaches a dangerous math:

That being seen

Is worth being unarmored,

That losing face

Is sometimes the price

Of keeping a heart.

And maybe that’s why it’s hard—

Not because pride is weak,

But because love is a brave,

Reckless act

That asks you to choose connection

Over control.

Pride keeps you whole.

Love risks breaking you open.

And still—

You lean in.

The Eligible Bachelor

There once was a man past his prime,

Who thought therapy’s just a scam, a crime.

With podcasts galore,

He preached, “I want more,”

But ghosted each girlfriend before dinnertime.

He claimed that he felt very deep,

Yet his chats were as woke as sleep. 💤

A “guru” in his jeans,

To girls in their teens,

His wisdom? Just red flags on repeat.

He’d sip from his weird-looking brew,

Say, “Commitment? I’ve paid all my dues.”

Though his age neared forty,

He dated only the sporty—

Fresh grads with no bills and no clues.

“I’m old-school,” he’d proudly declare,

While brushing his graying chest hair.

Yet somehow forgot,

While dodging the growth he sought—

That’s why grown women just wouldn’t care.

Gham-e-ishq

Gham-e-ishq tera sukriya 🙏🏻

Tere firaq (separation) mein

Main kaha kaha se guzar gayi

Andhi aayi, toofan aaya

Main bekhauf (fearless) si nikal gayi.

Log kehne lage hai khabti (possesed/obsessed)-

Mere hikaayat (story) mein

Shaamil tu to nahi.

Magar kaafi hai

Mere akele ki muhabbat.

Mera jahaan tere maujudgi se

Mukammal na sahi..

Doppelgänger

You rise from my ashes
Someone like me
I seem to know you from long ago

Your hands are clenched into tight fists
Like you are raring for a fight with the whole world

But your heart, unlike mine,
Is not made of glass
That breaks easily
With harsh words
And betrayals

You rise from my ashes.
Invincible.
You contain the fire only you can.
The kind that ignites in you
After you have died a thousand deaths.

Betrayal

Last night, I dreamed of your betrayal again.
You smiled and kissed me
As you plunged a knife down my neck.
I saw myself die in your arms.
You laid my limp, bloody body on the dust,
Then kicked it to make sure I was done for good.
My tears woke me;
Brought me back
To a bleaker reality.

Why did you pretend to love me
When all you had in your heart was hatred?
How did you cover its putrid stench?
All the perfumes from Grasse
Could not have camouflaged it.
Maybe it was my love that blinded me.
When everyone asked me to be careful,
I threw my caution to the wind.
And embraced you anyway.

Now, I write poems about betrayal.
A sad, pathetic, needy, wannabe poet.
But no amount of self-loathing
Could have woken me up to this ugly truth-
We are all alone in our struggles,
There is no reason to think otherwise.
So, thank you my friend!
Your absence is a gift
I will treasure forever.

Multiverse

In one world,
I married the first man I fell in love with
And lived my life thinking that I am not good enough
I slipped through the cracks in the floor
And walked on my tiptoes around him
Trying to stay invisible
So as not to arouse his anger
At the unfairness of having to live with something subhuman like me.

In another world,
I made the mistake of falling in love with the wrong man
But I learned early
To never value the happiness of someone else over my self-esteem.
So, I toiled hard to become someone with worldly success.
But I lost faith in love and in human connections.
I guess I lost there too.

In my ideal world,
I waited for the right person to sweep me off my feet
Sure, I made a few mistakes here and there-
But that did not deter me from believing in the best of people
And the possibility that I too could find happiness.
Like a self-fulfilling prophecy
It came to life
I dreamed my ideal world into existence.
It is possible to have it all
Only if we have the courage to believe.

Or maybe I have lived all these lives
In just one life.
And if you saw me
You couldn’t say which one was me living through what.

This is one of my favorite poems by my father. It is about a blue rucksack that travels the world. But then there is more- in the end it says how humans are crueler than animals.

I traveled the world with those words, I imagined the red, blue, yellow, green prayer flags of Tawang monastery. I saw the eyes of a mother zebra, caught by a predator, imploring its child with silent screams to run away to safety. I see the room transform into a Sun temple of Peru with the narrative. It shall remain one of my favorite poems ever.

ঝিঁঝিঁ ডাকে, বৃষ্টির মত বজ্র  ঝরে অবিরাম;
মানুষ তবে নরপুঙ্গবের চেয়ে নিয়তই ভালো;

I made an attempt to translate it into English:

My solitary blue vagrant rucksack
Is dedicated to traveling.
It jumps to my back
Pushes the couch potato in me
and transforms me into a global wanderer.

Sometimes, it vanishes on its own
Then returns when it wants
After the end of a myriad of adventures
Dusty and tired

I clean it up
While it narrates to me
Fervent fugitive stories.
It loves to visit countries
where amicable Nomads reside.

Sometimes, it visits Machu Picchu ,
The lost city of the Incas
Before it was plundered
By the Spanish conquistadors

Sometimes, it goes to Tawang monastery
Or visits the bloody river of Congo
Where caught in the grip of a crocodile,
A mother zebra implores her shocked cub
To escape with silent screams.

Why the fish in the Mekong river migrate,
How a doe grazes fearlessly in the Savannah
Beside a satisfied lioness,
The fight for the right to love-
My blue rucksack witnesses it all.

With every story,
My home turns into a verdant woodland
Where crickets chirp
Thunders come down with the rain, incessantly
Sometimes,  an ancient mummy or a deity ascends
With the glow of supernatural light
In my humble abode.

Deep green valleys, mountains, glaciers, and rivers
Wake up in my room
Fill it with cocoa leaves and Peruvian figs
As it transfigures into a Sun temple.

The wind blows the red, blue, yellow, and green prayer flags
In the red, golden, and white path to the cave
Where Buddha postures peace to the tired traveller.

The stories end and my home returns to its original state
My other worldly rucksack says
' Animals often behave like humans
but they are better in most regards
They don't murder, rape, or maim without reason
The female cricket or the lioness has the right to choose her mate
And a predator doesn't attack if it is not hungry.

Poros pathar

Years ago, I wrote a post about what the poem Poros pathar meant to me then. Today, I was reading some old favorites, and I recorded this. Hope you enjoy. Skip to 06:35 for the last 4 lines.
