Beyond the impasse

impasse
French : in- not + passe a passing
Literally, means...
A road or passage having no exit; a cul-de-sac,a deadlock or a stalemate.
The idea intrigues me..rather amuses me..

As a kid , I used to dig this computer game named "Claw". The story begins when the protagonist, a cat named Captain Claw- a valiant pirate, has his ship seized and sunk by the dogs. He fights tooth and nail.. but a total blackout leaves him helpless and he regains consciousness to find himself captive in a castle. Captured by his arch enemies, he must escape the prison and find the missing gems he needs for his amulet of nine lives. Every time the character finds himself in a particularly difficult situation, he says to himself "THERE'S GOT TO BE A WAY OUT"

Strange, but true..when I have faced apparent dead-ends in my life..I have often found myself saying the same....

There's got to be a way out..
There's got to be a way out...

Being the go-getter that I am, has its several disadvantages. I guess when you start taking responsibilities about things that are happening to you and around you, you tend to overdo it once in a while.
I guess it's ok...
But then you need to be a little laid back too..

Regress if necessary, be silent for a while, THINK
Take a stock of things.. and then open your eyes to look forward..

I have recently come across someone quoting that,'At one time or anothereveryone has been at the fringe of society in some way: an outcast in high school, a stranger in a foreign country, the best at something, the worst at something, the one who's different. Being an outsider is the one thing we all have in common.'

The cat fought for its nine lives..

We have but one..

And we will live it our way!

Yes, I subscribe to existentialism.
And I think it gives my life a lot more dignity to think that ONLY I am liable for it -rather than holding a bunch of celestial bodies responsible for having a certain alignment when I was born.

Consider this trifling incident: I conceived the idea to post this on 8th July.
Then I got busy with work, we had a block on blogspot by India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) ..and yet I have managed to post it today,
23rd July :)

Beyond the impasse you see....THERE'S GOT TO BE A WAY OUT
:)

So Long

It seems we are facing an impasse. So, may I suggest that we, the blog readers of ‘The Variegated Sky’, start discussing amongst ourselves and go beyond the impasse?
Well, Internet is a wonderful network (Oh, everyone knows that!) and these are few things (yes, there are many other things) I could find on the net:
Beyond
prep.
1. On the far side of; past: Just beyond the fence.
2. Later than; after: beyond midnight.
3. To a degree that is past the understanding, reach, or scope of: an evil beyond remedy.
4. To a degree or amount greater than: rich beyond his wildest dreams.
5. In addition to: asked for nothing beyond peace and quiet.
adv.
1. Farther along or away.
2. In addition; more: wanted her share but nothing beyond.
n.
1. That which is past or to a degree greater than knowledge or experience; the unknown: "Sputnik, the first satellite to enter the great beyond of space" Dale Russakoff.
2. The world beyond death; the hereafter.
Impasse
Noun
1. impasse - a situation in which no progress can be made or no advancement is possible; "reached an impasse on the negotiations"
deadlock, stalemate, standstill, dead end
situation - a complex or critical or unusual difficulty; "the dangerous situation developed suddenly"; "that's quite a situation"; "no human situation is simple"
2. impasse - a street with only one way in or out
blind alley, dead-end street, cul de sac, thoroughfare - a public road from one place to another
[From http://www.thefreedictionary.com/ ]
Bargaining impasse occurs when the two sides negotiating an agreement are unable to reach agreement and become deadlocked. Impasse is almost invariably mutually harmful, either as a result of direct action which may be taken such as a strike in employment negotiation or sanctions/military action in international relations, or simply due to the resulting delay in negotiating a mutually beneficial agreement.
Some theorists contend that impasse is used by negotiating parties in situations of imperfect information as a method of signaling to the other side the seriousness of their position. Impasse provides a credible signal that a party’s position is genuine and not merely an ambit claim.
Impasse may also arise if parties suffer from self-serving bias. Most disputes arise in situations where facts are able to be interpreted in multiple ways, and if parties interpret the facts to their own benefit they may be unable to accept the opposing party’s claim as reasonable. They may believe the other side is either bluffing or acting unfairly and deserve to be "punished".
As bargaining impasse is mutually harmful, it may be beneficial for the parties to accept binding arbitration or mediation to settle their dispute, or the state may impose such a solution. Indeed, compulsory arbitration following impasse is a common feature of industrial relations law in the United States [1] and elsewhere.

Cape Chaunar is situated on the western coast of Africa, in the south of Morocco.
It was called Cape Non, Cape Não, Cape Nam ("Cape No") by Portuguese mariners during the fifteenth century. It was considered the impassable limit for navigators, the non plus ultra beyond which no navigation could occur.
The thirteenth century Genovese navigators Vandino and Ugolino Vivaldi may have sailed as far as Cape Non before being lost at sea. In 1415, one of the exploring vessels sent by Henry the Navigator travelled 180 miles past Cape Non to Cape Bijander

You will also find a paperback ‘Beyond the Impasse’ (February 2003) by Amos Yong in amazon.com. This is a book toward a Pneumatological Theology of Religions, whatever that means.
Beyond the Impasse to What?
Stem-cell research may not need human embryos after all. But why are we researching in the first place?

Since Aparna’s background is Biotechnology, I speculate if she is coming out of the impasse with a theory on Biotech. I never read Biotech or Biology in my life.

OK, I have done enough work on ‘beyond the impasse’ for the day (during my lunch time) and am tired, now. Any other contributor? May the discussions be more interesting than my contributions borrowed (or marroed, whatever) from the net.

Not related to your current post:
I am sad as I have lost my entertainment (i.e. visiting various blogs via proxy servers). Now, I am able to reach different blogs straight way through my ISP.
In the last three days I was having lots of fun by imagining that we were in either China or Pakistan.
I will not say, "Hurray, the ban has been lifted!"

The game was “Claw” and is the world's first up-to-64-player, internet capable, arcade-style action adventure game for the PC!
For further details you may visit http://www.captainclaw.com/
Only problem with life, unlike PC games, is you can not reload from a point where you made a mistake.
I admire your fighting spirit.

A Musical Instrument

What was he doing, the great god Pan,
Down in the reeds by the river?
Spreading ruin and scattering ban,
Splashing and paddling with hoofs of a goat,
And breaking the golden lilies afloat
With the dragon-fly on the river.

He tore out a reed, the great god Pan,
From the deep cool bed of the river:
The limpid water turbidly ran,
And the broken lilies a-dying lay,
And the dragon-fly had fled away,
Ere he brought it out of the river.

High on the shore sat the great god Pan
While turbidly flowed the river;
And hacked and hewed as a great god can,
With his hard bleak steel at the patient reed,
Till there was not a sign of the leaf indeed
To prove it fresh from the river.

He cut it short, did the great god Pan,
(How tall it stood in the river!)
Then drew the pith, like the heart of a man,
Steadily from the outside ring,
And notched the poor dry empty thing
In holes, as he sat by the river.

"This is the way," laughed the great god Pan
(Laughed while he sat by the river),
"The only way, since gods began
To make sweet music, they could succeed."
Then, dropping his mouth to a hole in the reed,
He blew in power by the river.

Sweet, sweet, sweet, O Pan!
Piercing sweet by the river!
Blinding sweet, O great god Pan!
The sun on the hill forgot to die,
And the lilies revived, and the dragon-fly
Came back to dream on the river.

Yet half a beast is the great god Pan,
To laugh as he sits by the river,
Making a poet out of a man:
The true gods sigh for the cost and pain, -
For the reed which grows nevermore again
As a reed with the reeds in the river.

hey..great one..i would love to hear more of the imbibed philosophy of "existensialism" that relate to your "being of Self". and yeah i strongly believe in the so called "outsider" nature within ourselves. you may drain down ur efforts on someone, and when you have expectations, you dont get the recoprocatory feeling. The point at which u feel that, why are you doing this ?..sometimes its the opposite. you dont react untill you dont expect something. thrs an intruiging co-existence between both pathways..and it becomes difficult at times to choose the correct one.. :)..

btw, wht ws the reason behind "8th july"? ;) keep writing ..nd kudos to ur pen. :)

@zoxcleb

yeah it is..
I didn't appreciate it much in school..

But now I understand..

What it takes to be a musical instrument.. :)

U get through the greatest pain to be able to make the sweetest music :)

Aparna Ganguly said...

@sangram

Yes..
it is when it becomes exhaustive...
it becomes tiring...

But sooner or later sense prevails..

and u think u have more responsibilty towards those who understand and appreciate ur efforts than those who don't

It's when ur quiet inner voice says...what u were trying to hear...
THE TRUTH..
which might be painful..
but it helps u make a choice...and the right one..coz
the heart is wiser than the intellect

We can only comment and make this space alive. So, please stop saying that you will end scribbling some day. Where is the positive attitude?
Hmmm, on second thinking ... oh, yes… unless you stop scribbling due to extraneous factor. But have a look at this lady, Kee, 90 years old, from Southern California, United States - still kicking and posting her blogs.

But I really hope I never find a reason/ excuse NOT to..ever again :)
