Thoughts on Earth Day

Terraforming other planets to resemble earth is a good concept. But if we can’t take care of the home we currently have, what makes us think we will behave better when we find a new home?

My current locus of concern is the Great Pacific garbage patch. The United Nations Ocean Conference estimated that the oceans might contain more weight in plastics than fish by the year 2050. A lot of this plastic ends up in the stomachs of marine animals like sea turtles, dolphins etc. Albatross chicks die because their parents feed them plastic by mistake.

What can we do?
Volunteer for beach cleanups if you are physically able.
If not, at least pledge to ban plastic from your life. Use brown or reusable bags when you go for groceries. Don’t use straws. When you use a face scrub, make sure those don’t contain plastic microbeads that will eventually pollute our ocean.

I had a great day at the beach yesterday. Now imagine instead of the kelp and other flora, if the ocean threw back our garbage at us. The Earth is a forgiving mother, but we have abused this relationship for too long.
